About Jordan
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan • A monarchical state with its capital in Amman. The official language is Arabic. • Located on the Arabian Peninsula, it borders Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Palestine. • Distinguished by its diverse landscapes: from deserts (such as Wadi Rum) to coastal areas. Tourists are drawn here by the opportunities for spa vacations on the Red Sea and health and wellness at the Dead Sea. • A living open-air museum, where every stone preserves the memory of the civilizations that shaped the Middle East. Here, ancient columns stand side by side with Byzantine mosaics, and Nabataean tombs stand alongside Crusader fortresses. This is a place where history is not simply studied, but felt in the landscape, architecture, and traditions. • The land of biblical events, home to sacred sites significant to Christians, Jews, and Muslims: the Jordan River, Mount Nebo, and the Dead Sea. It is a key destination for religious tourism.
Russian-Jordanian Relations
Russian-Jordanian relations are based on long-standing friendship and cooperation, which began in 1963 with the establishment of diplomatic ties between the USSR and Jordan. Following Russia's recognition in 1992, interaction intensified, particularly under King Abdullah II. Key aspects of relations: • Political dialogue Both countries consistently advocate for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the situation in Syria. In 2015, the Russian-Jordanian Anti-Terrorism Coordination Center was established in Amman. • Economic cooperation Agreements were signed on trade and economic cooperation (1997), the establishment of the Russian-Jordanian Business Council (2007), cooperation in nuclear energy (2009), and oil and gas exploration (2011). In 2013, Rosatom won the tender for the construction of a nuclear power plant, but the project was suspended due to financial difficulties. The construction of a small nuclear power plant is currently under discussion. • Military-technical cooperation Jordan is purchasing Russian weapons. In the 1970s, the Jordanian army adopted the Osa and Strela-10 air defense missile systems, as well as the Strela-2 man-portable air defense system. In 2011, Russia delivered two Il-76MF military transport aircraft to the Jordanian Air Force (under a 2005 contract). A contract for the training of Jordanian pilots and technical specialists, signed in 2008, was also fulfilled. In 2013, Russia built a factory in Jordan to produce RPG-32 Hashim grenade launchers (under a 2006 contract). • Humanitarian Ties Interest in the Russian language and culture remains. An estimated 25,000 Jordanians speak Russian. An agreement waiving visa requirements for citizens of both countries came into effect on December 13, 2025.
